Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Painting Iron Man Armor, Part 2!

Publicerades den 14 apr 2021
Now that his Iron Man Mark I suit has been chrome painted and sealed, it's time for Adam to apply the washes that will tell the story of the armor's age and construction! Using acrylic-based paint, rubbing alcohol, water, rags and elbow grease over his lacquer base coat, Adam refines his technique to the point that he has finite control over his weathering. It's one of Adam's finest paint jobs to date, and he caps off his build by trying on the costume in full!

    • @Andy Clegg 😂😂😂

    • I love the way you embrace your inner child and have an insatiable curiosity always thinking, can I do that ? . On a similar note I have recently learned to twirl a six gun and holster it like the man with no name ! Most grown ups would think this a childish waste of time but I recognise a kindred spirit so I think you can relate :)

    • Hey Adam, I think you have a good sense of rhythm, have you ever considered trying drumming as a hobby and a workout?

    • I am very excited for a cinematic reveal of this. This is my favorite armor, from my favorite movie about my favorite superhero, and it has been awesome to watch all the parts leading up to this. Please do the cinematic reveal

  • Kind of awesome to lay off on the music over timelapses. More of that please.

  • Around 12 minutes in you should have left some of that lettering like people were afraid to clean the weapon too much for fear of wiping off the designation. Realistic, probably not, but it tracks to me and it looked cool.

    • Also, the cod piece looks a little too free hanging. Yeah, I know how that sounds. Regardless, you should attach it to the back with a clasped strap. I, personally think it would look better.

  • Amazing video Adam, and I think when it comes to creating art it's not about what life/people perceive it as. But how you see your work and if it turns out great or fail, either way you the artist/creator Invision art on the canvas and how it should fit into you're world 🌏. Dali said 'the world doesn't make sense', so why should 👁️.

  • Amazing work. But please ask the cameraperson to stop zooming in and out so much. A little when necessary is fine, but really quick zooms every few seconds isn't nice to watch.

  • Adam Savage, when you're doing chipped paint, spray your paint layer, mask and then spray your "revealed metal" elements. Then, with the masking STILL ON, do a grime pass where you remove with alcohol, but push the grime into the edges of the masking - this will give you the look of light being occluded by the edges of paint, and also, grime would build up at the edges of the chipped paint anyway. This will sell your chipped paint look far far better and is a better solution than hand painting or anything. It works in 3D art, it will work great for this practical stuff :)

  • Ich habe Ca.3 Woche länge schmerzen gehabt ......

  • Ein Grausame Geschichte.....

  • Bitte machen Sie etwas Schnee in der Stadt zum Abkühlen .....

  • Who remembers myth busters

  • I simply must rewatch the original Ironman now.

  • I know it's a very small percentage, but I really don't understand what type sad idiots are sitting at home pressing 'dislike' on a masterpiece like this. Honestly, can at least one of you talentless bums just reply to this and put your reasoning below? I'm genuinely curious.

  • 41:00 You've built a large Bobblehead...

  • Sorry I am trying to find the model name/makers of Adam's latest and greatest airbrush and can't remember in which of the Mark I videos he mentions it, less so the exact time when it gets mentioned. Anyone knows it off the top of their head? Thanks!

  • Adam he agrees with you his nobing his head in agreement with your statement ;)

  • Aw heck, every time you have the boots on I keep flashing back to "I don't think they make Nike in her size, Ray" :-D

  • Iron Savage: The Making awesome.... my face, cheeks to be exact, is tired cause i was smiling for that long time from rusting to the finale..... simply awed.

  • Remember when people didn't say a swear word every single sentence for emphasis or to be edgy? I love you, Adam, and your work. What a wonderful, wise soul

  • "Mate, your Mark I is developing some rust. You'll need to cut some of those panels out and weld in some new pieces before it eats all the way through..."

  • watching him work is just so relaxing ! he is such a great human being ! i bet he is awesome to work together with

  • 4:20 *random adhd stimming* (I do this alllll the time)

  • A great finishing touch would be to add a bluetooth speaker to play Ozzy on loop. When it's all finished tell us what the whole costume weighs.

  • Обидно что я английский язык не знаю, но я так восхищаюсь этим человеком! Еще с Разрушителей легенд)

  • "One day builds"

  • never apologize for your crazy hair! its wonderful. so weird thinking of when you kept it like a buzz cut 20 years ago at the start of mythbusters. it was so dark orange and scruffy never would have imagined it could be like blonde and wavy

  • love when Adam gets the air brush and becomes all Bob Ross-ish

  • The entire build he has been excited about getting to paint Ironman mark I and you can really see the happiness and excitement in the video. This is why I love to watch his videos, he truly loves what he does.

  • Adam you are an amazing talent! Your suit looks better than what was in the movie. Absolutely stunning!

  • Gonna fly?

  • Are you a member of MythBuster? You are a hero when I was still a child

  • Watching Adam paint this suit, is like Bob Ross painting a forest, just to touch here a little there, pull that back a little, let your eye go to some point. :D

  • at any given point you have to look at one of those pieces of metal and think to yourself that metal came from the desert in a war zone who knows how long it's laid there in the weather and when he was building it it was just steel he didn't care what it look like it was just a piece of metal to cover him and protect him he didn't try to paint it he didn't try to send it what would it look like

  • 50:00 Iron Man theme intensifies

  • "Dude! This is so freeken awesome." - Adam on x-mas morning.

  • the rusty knee - on camera, from a distance (@ 41:42) - still looks too shiny to me.. the shine needs to be taken down, a bunch.

  • What if you wore the suit and someone shot you with an RPG and then you drop out of a helicopter from 400ft into the desert to make it REALLY realistic...

  • cant wait to see you wear this at a convention. This looks absolutely sensational!

  • Should use methyl hydrate not iso

  • He sounds just like Tony Stark, no kidding.

  • A claustrophobic cavern of creation! An icon of incalculable intelligence! Molding men and metal to his means! He is... Adam Savage! The part-time superhuman.

  • What ever happened to the Velociraptor build? Was a great series

  • Piece of art Adam, fantastic work!

  • I watched this whole video, knowing he'll put the costume on, just waiting for him to say "I am Ironman"

  • It looks reminds me Something somewhere in the game called fallout

  • 45:00 please leave the camera on the tripod.

  • A cinematic reveal of this would be INCREDIBLE, that is a staggering amount of detail and work, and it deserves a good showing off!

  • So apparently that's a thing you do without the cig in your mouth huh? Wish I had known. Sure would have saved my eyebrows and eyelashes alot of trouble...

  • I'm pretty sure they can change the name from 'Adam Savage' One Day Builds' to 'Adam Savage's Having Too Much Fun!'

  • Something that would have been fun was instead of Stark ind. you should have put Savage Ind. just to see how many people would've spotted it.

  • 51:10 I watch for the stories, builds etc. But honestly, it's ALWAYS Adam's reactions to his work/stories. LOVE IT.

  • IronMan Mk1 is the ultimate hypeman, suit keeps nodding along to Adam the entire time🤣

  • Nice, but weren't you supposed to be making a Jericho Missile?

  • I’ll always think of Ned Kelly when I see the mk1 suit

  • small cracks on the arc reactor glass would look pretty neat, like battle damaged glass. Just a suggestion

  • This is not ironman, this is ironmonger IRL lol

  • Are you going to stamp his bum with a Savage Industries logo?

  • 50:57 man looks like the shop

  • Iron man = Fe male

  • "One day builds, part 2". Do you even know what "ONE DAY" means?

  • But this is atomic armor

  • Adam, I just _love_ how you're a big kid, revelling in the pure joy of it all. Well done, it looks incredible!

  • Adam's tribute to 'West side story.'

  • The issue though is that suit isn't actually all that rusty, go to 37-40 minutes in Iron Man 1 and look at it on a big screen, there is metal tarnish from impact, spatter from welding, etc but there is actually very little rust. And that makes sense for a few reasons. 1. Tony had to build each part of the suit often fabricating and rewelding.. you should know Adam that you can't weld to rust.. it doesn't work. 2. Rust requires moisture and time to form.. he was in a cavern in a desert in dry environment. 3. if there was the trust and oil you'd have seen it in the shot were he's knee actuator is shot while the stufs exploding around him.. it's clean. Plus look at the items around him when he crashes in what should have killed him.. tarnish yes.. rust no.

  • the head in the background slowly moving

  • Was it just e, or did it seem at times that Adam was building the world's most detailed Iron Man bobblehead?

  • Just wondering, is the stand Adam is using to house the suit a bought stand or one he's made?

  • That’s so cool

  • He such a big kid..I love it 😂😂

  • Gosh that's ridiculously good. I'll remember that 'clown in the liquor store' analogy! This encouraged me to go back to my Fallout T-45B model and touch it up some more, thanks!

  • Would be even better if you could have Iron Man himself come and see your armor. :) THAT would be sweet. :)

  • U look like a little kid

  • This shit is big enough to mount cooling in it for conventions. Definately worth spending 500 grams and a couple of hours on.

  • I love Adam because unlike most cosplayers he takes you on his journey of how he made it painted it and that’s nice instead of him just say oh I mixed this and brushed this now he tells and he show’s

  • Adam, may I suggest you build the “Super Shotgun” from the “Doom Eternal” game - its an amazing game and the design is dope!

  • "Adam Savage built this in his caaave"

  • Awesome. So glad part 2 has dropped. I always like to see how other people paint. I always use alclad 2 chrome but I'm intrigued about the pen refills your using.

  • Nice one adam, mk1 build has helped a lot with mine in particular the painting and weathering.

  • Very nice work from the soul. Glad to see an actual camera man at the end!

  • An absolutely brilliant effort throughout. Mr Savage, your painting and weathering skills are an inspiration to us all. My wife and I have used techniques learnt from watching your videos on everything from steampunk violins to RC car drivers, and we thank you deeply. It feels almost petty to make any further suggestions on top of the excellent work that you have done already, so we hope you don't mind if we make one tiny observation regarding the drive belts on the legs. As restorers of old machines, we have come across toothed rubber drive belts in many states of repair, but all have been matt in finish and none have had any signs of metal chipping on the rubber. The small sections of what appear to be chrome finish showing through the black and weathering of the drive belts are a bit like the clown in a liquor store that you mentioned during the video, at least to our eyes. Anyway, hope you don't mind us making that observation, and thanks again for a great series of videos!

  • When did the Bridgeport get replaced?

  • Sorry, but the way Adam was walking at the end in the costume made me think about 5th element good aliens and not Iron Man ;)

  • Pls take some ginseng with you at part 3 to 100% complete the costume

  • I shook my head in wonderment as you donned the suit. Its hard to convey my absolute adoration of your work Adam.

  • Is hard to believe the baddies didn't notice that NONE of the parts of this suit looked like the weapons that they asked Tony to build. Even more so because he didn't smooth & blend out his welds.

  • Awesome!!!!!!!

  • I love the weathering part, as Adam said it tell you a story about the object. One question, why no oil runs on the finish?

  • I wish this man was my grandpa

  • 25:25 is when the Bob Ross Adam Savage shows up in earnest.😜❤

  • Simply put, I just love these videos. KEEP. IT. UP ADAM!!!!!!!!

  • Makes me very happy to see you still doing what you love Keep it up

  • AMAZING! Can you tie in the upper legs to the hips? The upper gearing of the belt drives doesn't read right with them flopping around on 3 axes. Even just a last step where you snap a bolt from them to corresponding sockets on the girdle would 'sell' that they are driving from the core of the suit.

  • How do you get acrylics to have a rich pitted texture that rust has? Like the process of the pitting but also how rust has this dust like structure on the surface. Yes at 3m, rust and paint look alike but 0.5m, that can break down easily (paint being too flat).

  • 22:39 The way the head of the costume appears to be looking down at Adam, asking "Umm. What are you doing to my crotch, Adam?"

  • It's so weird how different circles come to opposing methods. In wargame miniature painting as well as scale modeling, the method of acrylic base and oil or laquer weathering is hailed as the greatest discovery. Here Adam is doing the complete opposite, and it's really hard to decipher why.

  • I just noticed the Raptor suit videos are no longer on the channel...does anyone know why? I’m sorry if this has been addressed before...

  • Adam paints 6 foot tall robot, i paint 6mm tall soldiers
